About AMA Insurance and the MedPlus Advantage ProgramThe Med Plus Advantage program was created in 1992 after student and resident AMA members voiced their concern to the AMA through a House of Delegates Resolution that existing disability income coverage fell short due to the unique dynamics associated with medical education.  Today roughly one in three medical students is covered by the program. The MPA program is a part of the AMA Insure Agency, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the American Medical Association.

Coverage under the International Medical Insurance Program will be placed by IMG with a surplus lines insurer, meaning the insurer is not licensed in any U.S. jurisdiction. Claims under the program plans are not covered by any state guaranty fund in the event of an insolvent insurer.
